Junior C Championship (Round 2)

Played in Kilmainham – 22/6/2018

Carnaross started the strongest and built up a 0-3 to 0-1 lead after ten minutes with Stephen Flattery (2) and Paul Donoghue on target. Carnaross continued to dominate the first half proceedings. Two quick fire Paddy Stalk efforts stretched the lead. This included a trademark strike off the left following a lay off from Alan O’Reilly who was after shipping a massive hit from Kevin Dowd. Two further points, a big kick from Stephen Flattery and a fine effort from Shane Casserly left Carnaross 0-7 to 0-1 to the good after twenty minutes.

The sides traded placed balls with a finely struck Dunderry 45 followed by a Decky Reilly free. Reilly added another fine point following a dynamic run by Pierce Fleming, before Dunderry closed the first half scoring with a fine point. Dunderry would rue a number of missed opportunities in the first half which resulted in a six point interval deficit 0-9 to 0-3.

A Dunderry backlash was inevitable but it was Carnaross who struck first in the second half. Paul Donoghue finished the move which was inspired by the bulldozing of the returning Michael Brogan. It was great to see Brogan return from a long-term injury even if at times he resembled a new-born calf on ice.

Dunderry recorded the next three points in the space of four minutes to leave a four point gap after 36 minutes. The Carnaross defence was under severe pressure but they responded well with John Brogan particularly to the fore. He was involved in the next two Carnaross scores, points from Paddy the Stalk and Donoghue which sandwiched a Dunderry effort. Entering the closing quarter the Ross held a 5 point lead once more, 0-12 to 0-7.

With the game in the melting pot, Carnaross were guilty of spurning an excellent goal chance while Dunderry hit 3 points in a row to narrow the gap to two. Shane Casserly responded with a fine score on 57 minutes to leave some breathing space and Dunderry chasing a goal. Despite six minutes of injury time being played the Carnaross defence held firm to record a satisfying victory in an end-to-end and physical encounter.
