Carnaross 3-13 Ballinabrackey 1-4

B League (Division 4)

Played in Grangegodden – 28/2/2016

Carnaross had an impressive win against Ballinabrackey this morning in the first Division 4 B league game of the season.

Despite their long journey, the Bracks were much quicker out of the blocks and registered 1-2 without reply. This woke Carnaross up and they began to establish a foothold in the game with Paddy Nugent and Paul Donoghue orchestrating the attack. The rear guard increased the intensity and restricted Ballinabrackey to a mere 2 points in the remainder of the game. Paddy Nugent finished off a fine free flowing move to the net and moments later helped himself to another major firing in from 20 yards courtesy of the post. A point from Goalkeeper-turned corner forward, Shane McNiffe ensured Carnaross held a commanding 2-5 to 1-2 half time.

Resolute defending by the Carnaross defence provided the forwards with ample opportunities to score in the second half. Peter Mullan knocked over a customary nonchalant score with the left to keep the scoreboard ticking over. After good work by the ever-busy Shane Casserly, McNiffe knocked over a second score from distance. Carnaross began to dominate proceedings around the middle and needed another goal to kill the contest. A Ballinabrackey kick out was intercepted by Paul Donoghue who fed Paddy Nugent who in turn teed up the in-form McNiffe who coolly finished to the net. The Carnaross Chairman/part-time footballer Tadgh Skelly was introduced to proceedings and scored on the turn from 10 yards out after a scintillating run by Peter Shay Farrelly. Carnaross saw the game out with scores from Carpenter, Nugent, Casserly and Donoghue.

This was an encouraging team display by the Carnaross team with plenty of free flowing football on display in Grangegodden.

Carnaross: Connor Kenny; Cian Gillic, Peter Carpenter (0-1), Matthew O’Reilly; Peter S Farrelly, Ian Donoghue, Liam Brogan; Michael Brogan, Tomás Plunkett; Blaine Lynch, Paddy Nugent (2-1), Shane Casserly (0-2); Shane McNiffe (1-2), Paul Donoghue (0-4, 2 frees), Peter Mullan (0-2); Sub: Tadgh Skelly (0-1) for Peter Mullan (BC)

Carnaross 0-9 St. Vincent’s 1-6

B League (Division 4)

Played in Gormanstown College – 3/4/2016

Carnaross and St. Vincents produced an enthralling encounter with both sides sharing the points in the unlikely location of Gormanston College.

The game was preceded with a minutes silence in honour of Carnaross club president, Jack Smith, who was laid to rest the previous day. Carnaross raced into an early lead with Stephen Flattery and Niall Mc Donnell putting the Ardcath defence to the sword. The deadly duo accounted for Carnaross’ 5 point lead with 20 minutes gone. With St. Vincents struggling all over the pitch, substitutions and positional changes were needed to counteract this Carnaross dominance. These changes had the desired effect but both teams continued to pass up scoring chances with the Ross defence ensuring that St. Vincents were forced to shoot from distance, leading to some rather erratic efforts. Eventually St. Vincents scored their first point before half time to stem the tide, leaving it Carnaross 0-5 to St. Vincents 0-1.

St. Vincents picked up where they left off after the resumption and began to dictate the game. Their stranglehold in the middle diamond was telling and eventually they broke through the Carnaross defence to notch up a quick fire 1-3. Indeed this could have been more were it not for some telling interceptions by goalkeeper Conor Kenny and his tenacious defenders. With 15 minutes remaining, Carnaross were desperately seeking an elusive score to ensure this match did not slip away from them. Up stepped Niall Mc Donnell to reignite the Carnaross effort and belief. Carnaross won the resulting 2 kick outs and with a delicate tap of the boot by centre back Ian Donoghue and an outrageous big kick by Stephen Flattery, the men in Maroon and Saffron hoops were back in front.

With moments remaining in this tension ridden encounter, Niall Mc Donnell delivered a long ball into the square in the direction of the Carnaross “Benjamin Button” (Ollie Murphy) who fielded nonchalantly, turned swiftly onto his left and with the aid of the upright, put Carnaross 2 points ahead.  The Waterford hurler, John Mullane, would have been proud of the fist-pump that ensued. However, Carnaross celebrations were cut short by the industrious St. Vincents who reeled off 2 unanswered scores, the latter a free kick on the stroke of full time, to end the match as a draw.

Drumconrath opened the scoring in the second-half as Carnaross struggled to get their opening score which finally came from Paul Donoghue after they had missed five earlier chances. Further points from Stephen Flattery and Ollie Murphy extended their lead. Two points from Drumconrath narrowed the gap but a goal from Stephen Dawson after good build up play from Paul Donoghue and Niall McDonnell gave Carnaross an eight point advantage with fifteen minutes remaining. Carnaross started well but failed to convert the early chances hitting four wides in succession. The breakthrough came in the eighth minute when Paul Donoghue pointed to give Carnaross a lead they would not relinquish.
