Club Smoking Ban Implemented

Club Smoking Ban Implemented

As of 1st May 2018, our club grounds will become a smoke free zone. Smoking is now strictly prohibited in all areas of our grounds.

The GAA is the heart beat of every community in Ireland and this type of initiative will not only raise awareness but also protect people from smoke, reduce smoking initiation rates among young people and increase the amount of people seeking help to quit.

The government have announced that Ireland will be completely smoke-free by 2025 and GAA clubs are urged to become leaders in this space by setting a positive example for all our members.

What are the benefits for the club?

  • By going smoke free we are helping to create an awareness about GAA clubs being hubs for healthy living.
  • Setting a positive example - this is a new initiative in the GAA and only a handful of clubs have gone completely smoke free.
  • Reduce the impact of tobacco & second hand smoke (SHS) on sports performance
  • Protecting children and young people from tobacco
  • Cleaner and safer GAA club grounds

The club executive are asking for full co-operation in this matter from all members at all levels in the club.

Any member or visitor found to be non-compliant will be approached by a member of the club executive and asked to stub it out or leave the grounds.

We see this as an important first step on the clubs journey to achieving ‘Healthy Club’ status within the GAA.

Signage will be erected in the coming weeks, detailing our smoke free policy and all club members are asked to familiarize themselves with the policy below.
