Carnaross 0-11 Drumbaragh 0-14

A League (Division 3)

Played in Drumbaragh – 23/2/2014

Carnaross suffered a three point defeat in their opening league game after a tough tussle with neighbours Drumbaragh.

The opening half was tight throughout with the sides level on four occasions. Thomas Nugent opened the scoring for Carnaross in the first minute with a point from play. The next two scores came from the home side but a point from Shane Casserly levelled matters after ten minutes. Both sides traded another point apiece with John L McGee pointing for Carnaross. Drumbaragh opened up a three point lead with five minutes remaining but Carnaross responded well with three point of their own from Brian Comaskey, Charles Brogan & Stephen Flattery to leave the sides level at the break, 0-6 each.

After the restart it was Carnaross who dominated the opening ten minutes and outscored the home side 0-3 to 0-1 with points from John L McGee (2) and Charles Brogan. However, Drumbaragh upped their performance and went on to dominate the next fifteen minutes, hitting six points without reply to take a four point lead with five minutes remaining. Peter Mullan and John L McGee scored a point each for Carnaross but another point from Drumbaragh left a goal in it with time almost up. A League (Division 3)

Played in Carnaross – 7/3/2014

Carnaross and Kilmainhamwood finally got to play their Round 1 league match after two previous cancellations, and Carnaross had to withstand a late Kilmainhamwood fightback before emerging winners by two points.

John L McGee gave Carnaross the perfect start by converting two frees inside the first two minutes. The game was a very tight affair in the opening stages and this was reflected on the scoreboard as it took fifteen minutes before the next point came along, a point for Kilmainhamwood. With five minutes remaining Carnaross finally upped the tempo and a point apiece from Pierce Fleming, Peter Mullan and John L McGee put a bit of daylight between the sides with Carnaross leading 0-5 to 0-1 at half-time.

After the restart it was Kilmainhamwood who opened the scoring but Carnaross went on to dominate proceedings for the next twenty minutes and points from Thomas Nugent, Peter Carpenter and John L McGee (2) left the home side leading 0-9 to 0-2 and apparently heading for a comfortable win. However, with ten minutes remaining Kilmainhamwood got in for a well taken goal and a point a minute later reduced the margin to three points. John L McGee added another point for the home side but Kilmainhamwood continued to believe there was something in the game for them and added three unanswered points to leave just one in it with time running out. Carnaross held strong at the back and were awarded a late free in added time which was converted by McGee.

Carnaross 1-10 St. Brigids 4-6

A League (Division 3)

Played in Ballinacree – 16/3/2014

The old saying “goals win games” pretty much summed up this game as four first-half goals from St. Brigids proved too much of an obstacle for Carnaross to overcome.

The home side hit their first goal in the opening minute and repeated the act five minutes later to open up an early six point advantage. John L McGee opened the scoring for Carnaross with a free but St. Brigids replied at the other end with 1-1 to take a nine point lead after just fifteen minutes. Carnaross finally got going after a goal from Stephen Flattery was added to by points from John L McGee (2) and Cillian Comaskey. Carnaross could have been closer but for another goal attempt which crashed off the crossbar. However, just before the half-time whistle, St Brigids broke away and took full advantage scoring their fourth goal of the half to lead 4-2 to 1-4 at the break.

St Brigids registered the first point of the second-half but Carnaross battled back and reduced the margin further with three points in a row from the boot of John L McGee. St Brigids added another point from a free midway through what was becoming a very physical second-half. Carnaross continued to put the pressure on the home side and added another three points with Dermot McGee, Paul Donoghue and Thomas Nugent hitting the target. This reduced the margin to three points, but in the closing stages it was St Brigids who got the vital scores adding two points to seal the victory.

Things could not have started better for Carnaross as a point apiece from Shane Casserly and John L McGee opened up an early two point lead. Meath Hill opened their account with a free in the fifth minute but Carnaross continued to dominate the early stages and found themselves four points up after John Carpenter netted after ten minutes. However, the home side were then outscored by 0-4 to 0-1 for the remainder of the half with Thomas Nugent pointing. That left Carnaross leading by 1-3 to 0-5 at the break.

John L McGee put Carnaross two points ahead after the restart, but by the time they got their next point from Dermot McGee with ten minutes to go they found themselves trailing. Four unanswered points from Meath Hill put them ahead by two points and John L McGee also was unlucky when his penalty kick came back off the bottom of the post. Carnaross hit the front in the second minute with a well taken point from play from defender Peter Carpenter. Carnaross continued to win most of the early exchanges but this was not reflected on the scoreboard as a result of some wayward shooting. Carnaross finally found their range and a point apiece from Cillian Comaskey, Charles Brogan and Patrick Nugent give them a slim 0-4 to 0-3 interval lead.

However, Carnaross found themselves level in the space of a minute thanks to Dermot McGee who got the game’s opening goal and quickly followed it up with a point in the next attack. Things got even better for Carnaross and McGee when he found the net for a second time three minutes later. A point from Cillian Comaskey put Carnaross four up but Bective finished the half well registering four points but a point from Shane Casserly ensured Carnaross led 2-3 to 0-8 at the break.
