Ballinlough 0-11 Carnaross 1-8

A League (Division 2)

Played in Ballinlough – 13/2/2009

Carnaross started their League campaign under lights when they faced neighbours Ballinlough and as always it proved to be a tough encounter which could have went either way but both sides ended up sharing the spoils.

The home side started brightest and three points from play gave them an early lead after about five minutes. Carnaross responded with a free from captain John L McGee before Ballinlough restored their three point lead with a free of their own. After 15 minutes Carnaross levelled matters when McGee converted a penalty after being dragged down in the area. However Ballinlough once again restored their three point lead with two coming from play. John L McGee hit a point from play following a good pass from Stephen Flattery before Ballinlough finished the first half scoring with a point from play to leave the home side in front 0-8 to 1-2.

Carnaross showed much improvement in the second period but despite their early possession it was Ballinlough who opened the scoring with a free. Carnaross halved the deficit with two points from play coming from Brian Comaskey and McGee. Another free kick kept Ballinlough in front before a McGee free and a point from play from substitute Damien Smith left a point between the sides with about ten minutes remaining. Ballinlough once again restored their two-point lead but Carnaross refused to give in and another substitute Daniel Reilly split the posts to leave the minimum between the sides going into the closing stages. The momentum was now with Carnaross and following a few missed chances they managed to level matters in added time with a well taken point from midfielder Brian Comaskey.

It was a fine team performance from Carnaross with maximum effort from every player. A strong second-half performance, particularly from the defence and midfield who restricted the opposition to just three points giving the forwards every chance of getting the team back into the game following a slow start.
