FINAL

Carnaross 2-10 St. Michaels 1-8

Under 16 Final

Played in Martry 11/7/2008

Carnaross captured the Under-16 Division 3 Championship when they beat neighbours St. Michaels by a five point margin.

Carnaross started the game playing with a strong wind and raced into an early 1-3 to 0-0 lead. The goal came from a long free from Charles Brogan which just dipped under the crossbar at the last moment. Dean Connell also scored a great point after receiving a long pass from Ian Donoghue. St Michaels got their first score soon afterwards but Carnaross finished the half strongly with further points coming from Barry O’Connor and a great sideline kick from Charles Brogan to lead by 1-6 to 0-2 at half-time.

Carnaross started the second-half just as they finished the first and following a goal from Dean Connell and further points from Charles Brogan they led by 2-9 to 0-3 with about 15 minutes remaining. However, having played two hard games against Rathkenny in the last 5 days, a semi-final and a replay, Carnaross began to tire and St Michaels were beginning to take control of the game and scored 4 points without reply. However the Carnaross defence stood firm with John Ward in the goals making a couple of great clearances. St. Michaels eventually got the goal they wanted to leave just 5 points between the sides with time almost up. Charles Brogan then settled the Carnaross nerves with another point from a free. St Michaels scored the last point of the game before the final whistle blew to leave the final scoreline 2-10 to 1-8 in favour of Carnaross.

This was a great team performance from Carnaross. The Carnaross defence led by Gary McDermott, Shane Casserly, Conor Peate, Michael Brogan and Ian Gillic completely dominated the St Michaels attack. Charles Dillon and the outstanding Charles Brogan were dominant in midfield. The twins Ian and Paul Donoghue and John Carpenter in the half-forward line worked tirelessly and tracked hard to help their defence while Barry O’Connor and Dean Connell in the full-forward line took some great scores.

After the game Ultan Fitzpatrick, the Meath Minor Commitee chairman presented the Under-16 shield to the victorious Carnaross captain Shane Casserly.
